The English language requirement is the thing that one should not overlook during visa processing. It is about meeting the exact exam format and conditions set under the migration law for the particular visa type. A small technical mistake in this, especially with retake results, can lead to refusal.
In the English test, there are retake options for some visa subclasses that are widely used by applicants trying to meet English score requirements. But recently, some important information regarding One Skill Retake (OSR) and Single Section Retake (SSR) was missing from the official website of the Department of Home Affairs. The department has acknowledged the omission and is working to restore the details online.
In the meantime, clarification has been provided on the MIA platform related to how OSR and SSR results are assessed for visa purposes. So, if you are thinking about retaking the English test, this update directly relates to you.
What Has Been Confirmed?
Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that in the Australian visa process beginning from 7 August 2025, it accepts:
- IELTS results that include One Skill Retake (OSR)
- Michigan English Test (MET) results that include Single Section Retake (SSR)
However, this acceptance does not apply universally across all visa subclasses.
There is one major exception: the subclass 482 visa.
For this visa:
- English test scores must come from a single sitting/attempt
- You cannot combine an original test with a retaken section
- OSR or SSR results are not accepted
This comes because Subclass 482 is governed by a legislative instrument that specifically requires results from one complete sitting.
Understanding OSR and SSR
IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR)
OSR allows a candidate to retake one of the four components:
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
But the condition is that it must be completed within 60 days of the original test and can be used only once per test attempt.
Michigan English Test – Single Section Retake (SSR)
SSR allows a candidate to retake one of the three sections:
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
But here the condition is that it must be completed within 28 days of the original test and can be used only once per test attempt.
Have the Required Scores Changed?
The legislative instruments LIN 25/014 and LIN 25/016 clarify how OSR results are treated for tests taken before and after 7 August 2025. However, the minimum IELTS score for Australia PR and the overall proficiency requirements themselves have not changed. It only clarifies how retake formats are assessed.
What About Tests Taken Before 7 August 2025?
However, for applicants who sat their English test on or before 6 August 2025, IELTS OSR was not accepted for the following visa subclasses:
- Subclass 476
- Subclass 482
- Subclass 485
For these visas, English test results were required to be obtained in a single complete sitting, as specified under the applicable legislative instruments.
What This English Test Update Means for You
OSR and SSR are now accepted for most Australian visas except the 482 because it still requires a single sitting. Understanding these rules is crucial for anyone planning to apply for an Australian PR because even a small oversight with your English test can lead to delays or refusals.
At Growmore Immigration, we specialise in guiding applicants through these technical requirements with precision. Our team ensures that your English test results and visa application fully align with the current legislative instruments that enhance your chances of approval.
