Planning a UK Trip? Dual Australian-British Citizens Can Waive the ETA Fee

Starting February 25, 2026, the United Kingdom will enforce its new ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) scheme. Under this rule, Australian and other international travellers heading to the UK will be required to obtain an ETA before boarding their flight and pay a $20 ETA fee as part of the process.

However, there is an important catch. If you are a dual Australian-British citizen, you can waive this fee entirely by travelling on a valid British passport. Here’s the full breakdown of what this means and how to ensure a smooth journey.

Understanding the UK’s New ETA Requirement

From February 25, 2026, the UK will strictly enforce its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system. This applies to Australian travellers visiting England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.

Under the new system, visitors will need to:

  • Apply for an ETA online via the official portal before travelling
  • Pay a $20 fee at the time of application
  • Receive digital approval linked to their passport

This requirement applies to all Australian passport holders, as well as travellers from many other countries, visiting the UK for tourism, business, or family visits.

Critical Information for Dual AustralianBritish Citizenship Holders

If you hold dual AustralianBritish citizenship, here’s what you must do:

Travel with a valid British passport

To avoid the $20 ETA fee, you must enter the UK using your British passport. Presenting your Australian passport will mean you’re treated as a regular international visitor and may be charged the ETA fee.

Check passport validity

If you’ve been travelling only on your Australian passport, ensure that your British passport is:

  • Valid and not expired
  • Renewed well before your travel date if close to expiry

For many dual citizens, this change has come as an unexpected shock and resulted in confusion. In some cases, the uncertainty has been so significant that individuals have even considered renouncing their British citizenship. This clearly highlights the urgent need for better awareness and early preparation.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid While Visiting the UK

  • Not checking British passport expiry dates

An expired British passport means visiting the UK through an Australian passport and paying the ETA fee.

  • Assuming the ETA is optional

It’s mandatory for most international travellers, and failure to have it can lead to denied boarding or entry delays.

Practical Tips for a Smooth UK Visit

  1. Verify your British passport early: Check expiry date and renew it if needed.
  1. Apply for an ETA in advance if you plan to travel on your Australian passport.
  1. Always present your British passport at airline checking if you’re claiming the exemption.
  1. Keep digital and print copies of travel documents together.
  1. Carefully think about your citizenship options: Some candidates are even thinking about becoming a “True Blue” Australian by giving up British citizenship. So, take legal advice before you act.
